Yahoo Sender Requirements & Best Practices

Yahoo Mail's requirements for all senders and bulk senders (authentication, one-click unsubscribe, 0.3% complaint threshold) plus recommendations on list hygiene, infrastructure, and reputation.

Operationalsenderesp-operator

Yahoo Mail's published sender requirements, enforced starting February 2024 with gradual rollout (List-Unsubscribe policy enforcement began June 2024). These requirements apply to all domains and consumer brands hosted by Yahoo Mail (including AOL and other Yahoo-hosted domains). Yahoo Japan operates independently and is not covered.

Mail that fails the requirements may be delivered to spam or rejected outright with an error code (see Yahoo SMTP Error Codes).

Requirements for all senders

Requirement Detail
Authentication Implement SPF or DKIM at a minimum
Complaint rate Keep spam complaint rate below 0.3%
DNS Valid forward and reverse (PTR) DNS records for sending IPs
Standards Comply with RFC 5321 and RFC 5322

Additional requirements for bulk senders

Yahoo does not publish a volume threshold defining a "bulk sender" — a bulk sender is one transmitting significant mail volume. For enforcement purposes, a "sender" is evaluated at the authenticated domain or From-header domain level; Yahoo uses all available information (content, IP, etc.) to review compliance.

Requirement Detail
SPF and DKIM Both must be implemented (not just one)
DMARC Publish a valid DMARC policy with at least p=none, and DMARC must pass. Including a rua tag for aggregate reports is recommended. Relaxed alignment is acceptable; the From-header domain must align with the SPF or DKIM domain.
List-Unsubscribe header Functioning List-Unsubscribe header supporting one-click unsubscribe for marketing/subscribed messages. RFC 8058 POST method highly recommended; mailto: method acceptable.
Visible unsubscribe An obvious, visible unsubscribe link in the message body that does not require login (body links may direct to preference pages, but do not substitute for the header)
Unsubscribe honoring Honor unsubscribe requests within 2 days — no grace period beyond this
Complaint rate Spam rate below 0.3%, calculated on inbox-delivered mail
DNS & RFC Same forward/reverse DNS and RFC 5321/5322 compliance as all senders

Scope of one-click unsubscribe

  • Applies only to promotional/marketing messages, not transactional messages (order confirmations, password resets).
  • If a non-required message class generates high complaints, Yahoo suggests adding unsubscribe options anyway.
  • When the List-Unsubscribe header is correctly configured per RFC 8058 and the sender has sufficient reputation and engagement, Yahoo webmail shows a blue "Unsubscribe" option next to the From address. Test at https://mail.yahoo.com/.

Spoofing counts against you

Spoofed mail using your domain counts toward Yahoo's enforcement thresholds. If your domain is being spoofed, move DMARC to an enforcement policy (p=quarantine or p=reject) — see DMARC for how to get to Enforcement safely.

Authentication details

  • DKIM key length: minimum 1024 bits; 2048-bit recommended.
  • Multiple DKIM signatures: Yahoo evaluates all signatures for DMARC alignment, reputation calculation, and Complaint Feedback Loop fulfillment. Multiple non-passing signatures do not add up to a DMARC pass.
  • SPF: publish the specific set of authorized sending IPs.
  • ARC (Authenticated Received Chain): recommended for mail that is forwarded.
  • Yahoo itself publishes p=reject for its own domains, so mail spoofing @yahoo.com-style From addresses is rejected.

Recommendations beyond the requirements

List acquisition and hygiene

  • Send only to users who specifically requested the mail; no purchased lists; no pre-checked opt-in boxes.
  • Use double opt-in (confirmation click) to improve list quality.
  • Set expectations at signup: what mail to expect, how often, what it looks like — and honor the frequency of the list's intent (don't escalate frequency unexpectedly).
  • Monitor hard/soft bounces and inactive recipients; remove invalid recipients promptly.
  • Periodically send a reconfirmation email to inactive subscribers.

Infrastructure

  • Publish valid, meaningful, non-generic reverse DNS (PTR) records that reflect your domain name; avoid names that look like dynamically assigned IPs.
  • Segregate mail streams: do not send bulk/marketing mail from the same IPs (or DKIM domains) used for transactional mail, alerts, or user mail — see Advanced IP Segmentation.
  • Keep servers patched; ensure they are not open relays or open proxies (Yahoo rejects mail from these).
  • Add BGP routes for IP space you own.
  • Connection management: limit messages per SMTP connection; reconnect if the connection terminates without an error code; open concurrent connections respectfully. Yahoo publishes no specific per-connection or concurrency limits.

Monitoring and reputation

  • Enroll all DKIM domains in the Complaint Feedback Loop and suppress complainers.
  • Yahoo reputation inputs include: IP reputation, URL reputation, domain reputation, sender reputation, ASN reputation, DKIM signatures, DMARC authentication, and user spam votes.
  • Good domain reputation alone does not guarantee inbox: a combination of factors (high complaints, URL obfuscation, missing rDNS, RFC non-compliance) can still redirect mail to spam. Per-user rules override system-level determinations.
  • Control traffic spikes; warm up new IPs gradually — see IP Warm-Up.
  • Complaint-rate evaluation for enforcement is continuous; domains with high complaint rates may be deferred.

Compliance

  • Adhere to the CAN-SPAM Act: no false or misleading headers, no deceptive subject lines.

Operational FAQ points

Topic Yahoo's answer
Whitelisting No formal whitelisting program. For large launches or legal notifications, submit a Sender Support Request; reputation may be adjusted but inbox delivery is never guaranteed.
New IPs/domains blocked Submit a Sender Support Request including the error and diagnostic codes from your logs.
Maximum message size Approximately 25 MB of attachments (varies by factors; not configurable by users or the Postmaster team).
Reporting abuse by Yahoo users Mark as spam in-product or use Yahoo's Report Abuse form, including full message text and headers.
BIMI logo not displaying Requires: valid SVG BIMI record, DMARC policy at quarantine/reject, bulk mail being sent, and sufficient reputation and engagement. Allow for DNS propagation; verify at https://mail.yahoo.com/ with cleared cache.
